It is psychotherapy\u2019s latest \u2018miracle cure\u2019. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" class=\"wp-image-450\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"https:\/\/normanclaringbull.onplexaweb.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Mindfulness.jpg\" alt=\"\">However, before you get too carried away, don\u2019t forget that just like any other human enterprise, psychotherapy too is subject to the whims of fashion. Up until recently Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was the flavour of the month &#8211; now it\u2019s so \u2018last year\u2019. These days, Mindfulness is the latest \u2018must have\u2019 therapy. Didn\u2019t you know? &nbsp;Are you \u2018behind the curve\u2019? Has Mindfulness passed you by? Don\u2019t worry &#8211; in a year or two, therapy\u2019s Fashionistas will all be into something else. You can catch up then. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, Mindfulness is not really the bang-up-to-date modern\npsychological cure-all that its supporters think it is. Like most new \u2018wonder\ntherapies\u2019. Mindfulness is only the latest twist on some very old ideas. The fact\nis that \u2018Mindfulness\u2019 is only a new name for some long-established,\ncommon-sense, psychotherapeutic techniques, ones that suit some patients and\nnot others. I\u2019ve been using them for years but nobody told me I was being super-trendy.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is Mindfulness? From a psychotherapeutic point of view, it is\nabout encouraging patients to learn how to become very aware of themselves in\nthe present moment whilst at the same time calmly acknowledging and\naccepting their feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. In other words, it\nis about acquiring the skills necessary to be able to become at ease with all\nthat a patient is experiencing in the immediate here-and-now. Its roots lie in\nthe meditative traditions of ancient eastern religions. There\u2019s nothing in mindfulness\nthat yoga enthusiasts or Buddhism devotees wouldn\u2019t recognise. It\u2019s certainly\nnot new. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, Mindfulness is simply about learning how to become at ease\nwith yourself, about how to become relaxed. There is of course nothing revolutionary\nabout using relaxation as a therapeutic tool. Lots of psychological therapists routinely\nuse Relaxation Therapy, (RT), as a means of treating patients with certain types\nof anxiety disorders. RT helps patients to learn how to calmly focus on the immediate\nand then to constructively face their fears. In other words, RT and Mindfulness\nare simply different sides of the same coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my own practice I use RT because it works, not because it is trendy.\nUnlike Mindfulness, RT is not based on any spurious ancient, or new-age, belief\nsystems. I\u2019m a scientist and I use scientific principles. The science of RT is\nbased on the biological fact that humans have two major nervous systems. One is\nthe conscious system, That\u2019s the one that we use to think with and to\nexperience emotions and fears. The other is the autonomic system. That\u2019s the\none that controls our bodies, (heart rate, breathing, sweating, and other\nassorted physiological functions). The important biological fact is that these\ntwo systems interact with each other. Any ups or downs in one system\u2019s activity\nlevels will cause corresponding movements in the other system. The trick is\nfinding out how to purposely control both nervous systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we feel directly or indirectly threatened we get anxious. These\nthreats can be real or imagined. They can be high intensity and sudden, (a car\ncrash for example); they can be low intensity and long term, (bullying for\ninstance). No matter what sort of a threat it is, when it impacts on us, both the\nconscious and the autonomic nervous systems rev up and prepare us to deal with\nit. This is the well-known \u2018flight or fight\u2019 response. So, when we become\nexcessively anxious, then clearly these two nervous systems have gone into\noverdrive. People who suffer from clinically significant levels of anxiety are\nin a permanent state of heightened conscious and autonomic systems activity.\nTherefore, when they hit an additional worrying or frightening situation, (real\nor imagined), their already revved up nervous systems quickly become\noverloaded. This means that the first key task for the psychotherapist is to\nhelp chronically anxious patients to generally reduce their background anxiety\nlevels. The second key task is to help them to learn how to reduce the anxiety\nengendered by specific real or imagined threats and so not further overburden an\nalready hyper-active system. I have often found that Relaxation Therapy is a\nvery useful way of achieving these two tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relaxation Therapy is not difficult to apply. It is simply a method of\nprogressively relaxing the body. Initially patients do this under the direction\nof the therapist. Eventually they learn how to purposefully relax under their\nown directions. As the body gradually relaxes so too does the mind. Anxieties\ndecrease and panics attenuate \u2013 problem solved! On the surface, the methods\nused to introduce RT to patients might seem similar to those used in\nhypnotherapy. However, RT is most emphatically not hypnosis. Hypnosis is about a\npatient temporally surrendering control to the therapist. In direct contrast, the\ncore purpose of purpose of RT is to enable patients to take better control of\ntheir own minds, of their own selves. Patients use RT in order to become calmly\naware of what\u2019s going on around them; what\u2019s going on in themselves and in the\ntrue nature of their own beings. Put simply, they use RT to get their lives\ninto balance in the present and to place tomorrow\u2019s worries where they belong \u2013\nin the future. The trendies call this Mindfulness.
